Rotation sounds ahead of its time for 1979, kind of casually electronic rather than in-your-face electronic like others incorporating synths, drum machines and sequencers were doing as the 80s kicked off. A legendary downtempo groove with big, pulsating energy.

Greg Phillignanes - Lazy Nina

Yes it's the one cut off Greg Phillignanes' second album that I like and boy do I like it. There's a simple reason: it was written for Greg by the great Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, and it comes through so clearly in the sweet vocal harmonies, masterful chord selections and laid-back jazzy yacht groove. The writing is complex but the result is easy lounge funk bliss. Skip the rest of this album and keep the Neens on repeat.

Jimmy Smith - Can't Hide Love

Jimmy Smith goes disco! The iconic Hammond player had a long career in jazz, R&B and funk that included sick moments like Root Down (a ripper live album whose title track was nabbed by the Beastie Boys on Ill Communication) and he was always great - even when trying his hand at disco, which loads of artists from other genres did a shit job of when they jumped on the bandwagon. Chunky bass, soaring vocals and slaying Hammond :)

Leon Vynehall - Inside The Deku Tree

I've never fully made my mind up about Leon Vynehall, but credit where credit's due - the opening track off debut album is just dazzling. Super evocative and emotive, it's a real composition with real dynamics and real arrangement that you wouldn't expect from your average house producer. Goosebumpsy stuff.

Len Leise - Desperado Dining

THROWBACK ALERT. Len Leise's magnificent edit of Azymuth's Despertar lives on in my heart as one of the finer edits out there. No lazy looping or quantised kick to sell some easy records - this one was clearly treated with respect and love to tease out a gently groovy side of an already awesome song. This was a coveted 12" when it came out in 2015 and it's still hot property on Discogs for good reason. A real nice trip.

Here's that YT playlist with all the tracks I've posted in the last few months if you wanna keep up to date <3

THANKSIES

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-17933985760496727842022-09-20T16:47:00.002+10:002022-10-11T21:47:45.558+11:00Five tracks vol. 7

Got nothing but good vibes music to share this week since it's spring and I like the sun. Full to the brim with gorgeous vocals from both Tata and Motown dude G.C. Cameron, it's smooth beautiful disco from the top shelf. No idea if Theo's edit was actually released, but you can hear it on his gobsmackingly good final set from Plastic People.

Eon - We'll Go On

Oh goody, it's big, fast, bright, emotional soul from your boys Eon. I so often find myself humming this catchy number to myself, it's just a beaut of a melody. Weirdly these fellas did just the two albums and they're both self-titled - guess they were either super into the name or didn't have much imagination. But they're good boys and this is a great song.

TC James and The Fist O Funk Orchestra - Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese Remix)

I've never quite understood the niche sector of disco folks who seem to be obsessed with featuring a woman moaning to climax in a song, but that aspect aside this is a fucking belter of a tune. When the bothersome sex noises finally peak and the sax jizzes everywhere it's an absolute dance floor melter. Found this on a comp called The Men In The Glass Booth which has some other quality OG disco re-edits from the likes of Walter Gibbons, Jim Burgess and Francois K, it's worth checking!

Little River Band - It's A Long Way There

Yes hello it's Aussie AOR legends Little River Band. Yes the one that John Farnham was in for a while but not at this point in the mid-70s when they recorded surely their best song, It's A Long Way There. Yes it's got to be up there with the best AOR jams of that era, with great Crosby Stills & Nash-style harmonies, big Doobie Brothers Long Train Runnin' energy and an indulgent amount of classic rock guitar soloing. Yessss I like it.

Michael Franks - When The Cookie Jar Is Empty

I don't like picking just one Michael Franks track to share because he has so much magnificent music in his discography, but oh well. He's an interesting fellow - his lyrics usually have this novelty silliness to them yet the music is pure class. It's smooth loungeroom jazz with a perfect '70s chiller aesthetic that makes excellent background music but shouldn't be discounted as foreground music because he's just really fucking good. Anyway, here's one of the many that I like.

THANKS.

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-54257289628271712772022-09-06T20:30:00.001+10:002022-09-10T01:00:02.322+10:00Five tracks vol. 6: oddballs

Had a couple of stranger bits I felt like sharing this week and I figured I'd dump all the outsider weirdos into one place. I love strange records by unusual people who have completely their own sound and vision, and they usually come with really interesting stories attached. Anyways, here are a few of those things.

Ronald Langestraat - I'm Ready For Dancing

I really quite adore the first Ronald Langestraat album that South Of North unearthed and reissued a few years back. Supposedly the Amsterdammer was getting weary of the "high brow" jazz scene in the early '80s and did the LPs as a bit of a personal space jazz project, playing every instrument and self-recording in his living room. This track is one of my faves from the record - it's a little jazz, a little leftfield disco, a little weirdo lounge, wrapped up in an endearingly primitive package.

Vito Ricci - I'm At That Party Right Now

Dunno how I ended up uncovering this one but it vividly transports me back to the first time I went to London in 2015 or something and it was on heavy rotation at the RA office. It's from a Music From Memory retrospective of New York weirdo Vito Ricci's mid-80s releases, and it's somehow completely mesmerising to me. It's astonishingly lo-fi outsider boogie that's addictively groovy in a way that doesn't quite make sense to me.

Tonetta - A Really Big Cock

Of all places I heard this played on FBi Radio while I was driving and it floored me, quickly sending me into a years-long fascination with the now-73-year-old Canadian sex-freak enigma that is Tonetta. There's just too much to begin to explain, but if you haven't gone down the Tonetta rabbit hole, I can't recommend it enough. In any case, this is a song about his big dick that happens to be deviantly funky and remains one of my favourites.

Human Egg - Feeling On My Mind

This is not a weird song but, as a whole package, the self-titled 1978 Human Egg album is remarkably diverse and downright WEIRD. I picked up the reissue on Favorite in 2010 after hearing this chunky low-tempo strutter and was quite bamboozled. There's other funky stuff like this, including the uptempo jazz workout 'Love Like This' that flicks between space disco and Head Hunters-grade fusion, and then there's some totally off the wall shit like 'Onomatopoeia'. But all in all, a very special record.

Osamu Shoji - Airport in South Islands (Waffles Edit)

Ok this is totally splitting from the formula because it's a reworking that hardly resembles the original, but my blog my rules. Osamu Shoji's 1979 cosmic synth album Night Flight is a real oddball beauty. This edit on the anonymous Waffles label, which I wouldn't make any connection to the original if it wasn't listed on the Discogs page, is squelchy, low-tempo electronic funk that's sure to impress anyone you play it for.

Back with regular programming next week 🫡

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-7291446331979270332022-08-30T19:16:00.004+10:002022-08-30T22:14:56.326+10:00Five tracks vol. 5

I'll always have a tiny bit of regret that I gave this blog such a dogshit name. And it was especially stupid when all I was posting was DIRTY ELECTRO HOUSE BANGERS. But you can't be that mad at someone who was a little baby. What I can do is share some actual nice disco music to make amends.

Norman Connors - Once I've Been There

It bursts out of the gates at full pelt with horns blaring and strings stringing, winding up a wild crescendo before dropping into one of the slickest mid-tempo disco grooves I know, filled with big band hits and ultra-funky, cruising verses. I just adore this record so much, and it hits so hard on a big system.

First Choice - Double Cross (Larry Levan Remix)

If I could have heard one record at the Paradise Garage, it may well be this one. Other versions of it don't work nearly as well - Larry arranged this mix to perfection, from the dramatic acapella > strings intro to the questionably chirpy early chorus/verses then launching into the real meat of the song, the phenomenally funky slap bass-driven dance floor nuke section. The first couple of minutes are a bit of a whirlwind and never hint at the gooey goodness at the centre.

Jaymz Bedford - Happy Music

It's sinfully repetitive, but I guess that's what dance music typically does, and I could listen to this squishy bass magic for eternity. This is the kind of tune you can imagine inspiring the birth of Popular People's Unlimited (is that label still a valid reference point?) and despite being recorded in 1981 it sounds absurdly fresh. Heavy chugging electronic funk with a happy message.

Alex Rodriguez - El Mercardo

You just don't hear enough '70s Latin American jazz-funk fusion that features thundering timpanis. Pretty cowardly, really. This stunning nugget by Venezuelan guitarist Alex Rodriguez (who only has one solo album to his name, sadface) manages to hang onto plenty of South American sauciness while still being an all-out, high-octane shredfest. Must have been a bonkers session to sit in on.

Poncho C. Saint Fingers - When I Come Knocking

I think I may have already given a nod to Andy Hart's ripper RA podcast recently, and either way there's more to come. I fell in love with this track instantly with its wobbling bassline and silky smooth boogie vibe. Another sad one-off, Poncho C. Saint Fingers (sick name) seemingly only released the one 7-inch in 1980. Why do that :(

Thank you for indulging me.

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-54614245770976887652022-08-23T19:25:00.002+10:002022-08-23T19:25:39.778+10:00Five tracks vol. 4: psychedelic special

I adore '70s psychedelic rock, so that's today's theme. There's plenty on the album that's A-grade, but Like I Do in particular is pure bliss in the order of The Sopwith Camel's Fazon. The fact that this syrupy jewel came out of Aus makes me feel a bit proud.

Paladin - Third World

Fuckloads of cowbell? Yes. Setting up a ripping groove with only bass, percussion and vocals? Yes. Lots of WOOOOs? Yes. Inexplicably ending the track seconds after one of the most awesome piano entries ever? Yessss. I'd give 40 million dollars to hear an extended session of this 1971 masterpiece, but the teasing just makes me want to listen to it again and again.

Neal Francis - Changes Pts. 1 & 2

I'm a bit of a 'they don't make music like they used to' grouch, so hearing modern stuff like this makes me so happy. All the best elements of 70s psych rock, produced with a super warm sound - if I was told this was recorded 45 years ago I wouldn't question it. Bonus points for mister bass man who absolutely cuts sick. Can't say the rest of Neal Francis's stuff I've heard has hit me in the same way, but I'm very pleased this track is out there.

Mark-Almond - The City

This featured on Lexx's magnificent Lovers Lane mix many years ago and always stuck out to me as a perfect slice of groove tranquility. I discovered recently it was a refresh of the band's 1971 unplugged-style original song that's super beautiful in its own right, but the plodding bass of the 1978 version probably tips it slightly ahead for me. Both stunners, though.

Shoot - Mean Customer

Firstly, who the fuck designed this album cover? Surely even in 1973 this looked dated and bizarre. But, pull the record out of the monstrosity of a sleeve and you'll hear this very fine meeting of psychedelic, folk and soft rock released as a one-off by Shoot, a group helmed by Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty. It's good.

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-69610902709503703192022-08-16T17:42:00.001+10:002022-08-16T17:42:11.946+10:00Five tracks vol. 3

It's pretty amazing how shit Blogger is these days. Suppose it was always this shit, but it really hasn't been improved in the slightest in the 10ish years I've been off it. Anyone know how I can set up a subscribe-by-email situation with this archaic technology?

Hey here are some pieces of music that I hope you like.

The Valentine Brothers - Money's Too Tight (To Mention)

It was only a few years ago I discovered that Simply Red's version of Money's Too Tight was a cover. Fuckin hell the Valentine Bros original is red hot. Absolutely filthy groove that makes Simply Red sound like little baby music. Surely one of the sickest synth basslines ever too.

Alex - Flying High (You And I)

Plenty of people have heard of Alex's 1977 track I Gotta Feel Something thanks to folks like Floating Points (if you haven't, it's spectacular) but I only recently came across this beauty by the Polish-Norwegian singer. Same year, different album - it definitely sounds like something I might have heard in a Floaty P set. Short, sweet, snappy and fun.

Robin Trower - I'm Out To Get You

I first heard this in the final episode of The Leftovers — one of the most incredible TV shows ever that also reintroduced me to this Black Keys masterpiece — and listened to it constantly for weeks after. A little bit spacey, a little bit dancefloor-friendly rock, it's a perfect package of an earworm bass hook, great vocals and killer guitar from Trower.

Material - Ciquri

OK, if the Valentine Brothers tune is filthy, I suppose this is in full-on sewage territory. Some of Material's music is a bit hekkers for my taste, but their Secret Life compilation gathers up some pretty good stuff, and Ciquri takes the prize. The groove is so sludgy it's almost repulsive, and the guitar sounds like it was recorded in hell. Very, very, very good, but wear gumboots.

Nação África - Camarão Orkestra

Favorite Recordings can be a tiny bit hit and miss for me, but the hits are big ones, and the catalogue is so extensive there are plenty of them. Case in point: this funky as hell Afro groove from 2020. Probably one of the songs that made me go buy a bass that I sold pretty quick because I didn't become crazy good at it within a month. Anyway, it's a jam.

See you next week pals.

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-73214701553584815732022-08-10T17:10:00.001+10:002022-08-10T17:10:02.427+10:00Five tracks vol. 2

Hi m8s. I'm feeling VERY creative so I'll be creating some remarkably accurate sleeve reproductions to go with these posts, so DD is officially an art blog now too.

Here are your tunes, put them in your ears and tell me what you think.

Jah Wobble & The Edge - Hold On To Your Dreams

Ahh man, this has been a cherished tune of mine for such a long time. What a wacko cast on this mini album - you've got bass freak Jah Wobble, kraut master Holger Czukay and THE Edge (from U2, yes) with Francois K doing some drum programming. No Holger or Francois on this track, but Arthur Russell gets a writing credit for extra weirdo star power. Anyway, it's a magical jaunt that doesn't age.

Arthur Adams - You've Got The Floor

Seems like this one's having a real go round the circuit at the moment, and why wouldn't it? Just a straight up mid-tempo disco classic with a fucking belter of a sax solo. Looks like the good Italian folks at Groovin are reissuing it soon, get those release notifications set.

Sylvester - Give It Up (Don't Make Me Wait)

Why not double down on golden era saxophone disco? The embers are really glowing on this semi-overlooked Sylvester cut thanks to some disgustingly rude bass and sax shredding. Imagine Larry Levan thumping this one out on the Paradise Garage system, it must have been just heavenly.

Kerri Chandler & Joe Claussell - Escravos de Jó (Robust Horns)

Ever since hearing it in a revoltingly lo-fi recording of an ancient Harvey set, I've long dreamed of starting a beachside set with this. A gift sent from the house gods, it's so densely filled with Joe Claussell's transcendently good vibes and uplifting percussion. That guitar comes in and it's amazing. Then the kick comes in and it's even more amazing. Ugh, total euphoria.

Marlena Shaw - Loving You Was Like A Party

From a festival-grade opener to a slow-dancing late-night closer - the magnificent Marlena Shaw really nails this soulful, sentimental ballad. This overly-indulgent French disco gem is a) over 14 minutes long for some reason, b) about a computer who wants to be in love or something, and c) uses all the right disco clichés while managing to be totally off-the-wall unique. 1977 is the absolute sweet spot for me when it comes to disco, and it's because of tracks like this. Stupid and brilliant.

Alphonse Mouzon - By All Means

Then we get to 1981 where, for my ears, a lot starts to go wrong. Not so here with this spectacular joint where the great Alphonse Mouzon is joined by Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard for a total shredfest. Nobody holds back, Herbie especially, and even though the cheese is spread on thick, three of the all-time greats (and two other players who I'll admit I just dunno, sorri) blasting their chops steer it right. 'Do I Have To', a slower jam on this record, is also A+++.

Dunkelziffer - This Is How You Came

Full credit to Hugh B's stellar Skylab Radio show Mornings From The Gonsch and guest Big Gus AKA James i.V for putting me onto this one. It's sweet and sad and beautiful, but it's still rich with trickling jazz guitar, Afro-salsa feel and a gently berserk keys solo which I think Bataan played himself. Really good music.

John Carroll Kirby - P64 By My Side

Daddy's home.

Felt a bit dispassionate from working in music full time for so long but I've got that tingling to share some tunes again. This is probably a really dumb place for it, if anyone has a bright idea for where to post music these days (aside from an online radio show, cbf) feel free to weigh in.

Got a cool decade's worth of stuff I've been sitting on, so let's start rummaging through the archives hey?

Renzo Fraiese - 12 Engle Street (Red Greg's Full Length Kamagra Edit)

Okie doke, no mucking about, this one's a big treat. I think I first heard this played by Red Greg at a You're A Melody party in Sydney back in 2017 and it was the perfect example of that kind of high-octane soul that Floaty P and co. can be really devastating with. Nothing too tricky about this edit, it mostly just extends a track that really needs extending because it's so fucking good.

Candle Family - Love Theme From Two Hearts

Dunno who the fuck Candle Family is but woah mama this is a burner. A bit like Tom Noble's fine effort via House of Spirits, this track is a magical, authentic conception of disco in the 2010s that feels new rather than 'nu'. Chunky, muscular bass, horn and piano stabs, sensual deep vocals saying some vaguely sexual shit - it's everything you want in a slow and funky floor-heater.

*** DOUBLE FEATURE ALERT ***

Kimiko Kasai - We Can Fall In Love
Kimiko Kasai - Love Celebration

Kimiko Kasai fuckin rules. I discovered from a YouTube comment that she's actually Maya Rudolph's stepmum, AND that Maya Rudolph's mum is Minnie Ripperton. Hectic. Anyway, these are two of my favourites from her catalogue. We Can Fall in Love is light and breezy disco with some sick jazz guitar certified by Mark Grusane (I think) and Love Celebration is a slow and slunky bass-led groove that was given a nice Cali adaptation by Vex Ruffin on Mabuhay Boy.

Made In U.S.A. - Melodies

This one's a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing. It begins with some obnoxious lyrics like "tra la la" and "twiddly-dee" — the kind of frolicking, sickly-sweet cutesyness that tarnishes the lamer side of disco — but don't be misled, it bares its teeth if you stick with it. In Flagranti fans might recognise the dark and dramatic second half as the source for the hats and vocals for Low Dose Virility.

Håkan Lidbo - Delhi's Delight

I know the kids like their 'electronic beats' so here's another modern one (ie. released this century) to appease the youth. Haven't got a clue where I came across this one, but it's sludgy and punchy and percussive and has this kind of groovy urgency about it. Something about the tense energy makes me quite like it. Sorry if this is tech housey or something, I dunno what's what anymore.

OK thanks. Talk to me, tell me if this is a dumb idea, tell me if you have a smarter idea, tell me if I've lost my edge. Seems fun though.

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6515350539803370537.post-84603720403985450792015-03-17T21:39:00.000+11:002015-03-17T21:39:37.220+11:00Hey Guys How U Doin'?

Oopsies sorry pals I kinda left you hanging there for a bit hehe. It occurred to me that I should probs clear a few things up. For starters, I am alive and I have an Internet connection. I am also very time-poor and lazy-rich, plus have been feeling pretty uninspired on the music front for the past 18 months or so, hence no bloggy. It was perhaps rude to vanish so abruptly (like a spooky ghost ooooo) but this is my simple and boring explanation.

Do people still read blogs? What do people do? I don't know what it is that I do, I work and sleep and rotate between a variety of different sized Facebook-displaying devices, sometimes it's the weekend but usually not, occasionally I send an email to find out where my SuperStereo mixer is 30 months after I ordered it (it's "coming"), I think that's about it.

If you still want music, I'm gonna try to use my Facey page a bit more and hopefully record some mixes which will be up on my Soundy.

Here's something I just uploaded which I actually did back in October 2013, a bunch of fun disco-funky stuff for my friend Adi's radio show, I think it's pretty fun:

Also I did a podcast for my Astral People buddies ahead of their Moodymann gig that I was lucky enough to play. Just some summer house sorta vibes, hands on beers not on chins.

Hmm I still feel kinda bad, maybe I should give you some tunes as well. I'm sure as heck not gonna text about them, you'll just have to imagine I've added some asinine written commentary as was the DD way. I love all of 'em so just click and if you aren't into them, it's probably your own fault.
Here's one for a Sunday morning pillow spooning session. Or a lover spooning session if you're a real lucky duck. Something a bit personal which I'm very happy with. This is a romantics only zone: if you're a dirty love-hater then you can just go back to listening to Megadeth or whatever hair-swinging chain-thrashing nonsense it is that you steroid pumping creeps enjoy. For the rest of you lovely softies, this musical transmission is all yours.

No tracklisting for this mix, at least not yet. Not because I'm trying to keep any hidden gems under wraps, there's plenty of well-known stuff and certainly no real rarities, but it's just nicer to go in blind.
Moving on from an all-jazz unmixed playlist, here's a recording of me pretending to remember I DJ past dinner time occasionally. There's some Melbourne-via-Detroit sort of cosy deep house that eventually bleeds into some more open-aired atmossy stuff. I'm quite fond of this one. Hope you enjoy!
Ho hum. So after setting out to do a jazz-centric Delishcast with #12 and failing dismally thanks to a few drinks and a pitifully short attention span, I've set out to right the wrongs of the past and do this good and proper. Jazz was a really big part of my mid-to-late-to-post-puberty life - I was an aspiring jazz drummer who never had any chance of actually making it because practice is for pussies - and it's still a big passion of mine even if I don't really get to share it. I was going to get all radio-show-host on this one and babble over the tracks but figured that if that didn't ruin the listening experience the first time around it would definitely make repeat visits pretty miserable. So I'll scribble some commentary here instead and spare you all. Not that anybody still reads this blog anyway. Not that this blog still really exists. Please excuse me, I haven't had a drink in four weeks.

SO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, HERE IT IS. A THRILLING ONE-OFF BOLD NEW BLOG POST FORMAT FOR YOU, MY DEAR DWINDLING FANS AND FRIENDS.

1. Bugge Wesseltoft - Skog

Bugge has been one of my favourite artists on the planet for about a decade and his music has been something I've listened to consistently and constantly over the years while my tastes have jolted left and right. This opening track to the album Film'ing is really beautiful, Bugge really gets deep into atmospheric percussive stuff on the record and the overall quality of the recording and engineering is just amazing.

2. Soulstance - Lead The Way

This is a real nice Brazilian-flavoured cut from an Italian group released in 2006. A super slick mild-salsa groove which finds a great balance between old and nu. I especially dig the drummer, the ride really drives the song and gives off lots of good energy.

3. George Kawaguchi - Cantaloupe Island

I've always been very fond of this album of Herbie Hancock covers that Japanese drummer and bandleader George Kawaguchi did. Even though it's not the hottest playing or anything, his version of Cantaloupe Island is brimming with enthusiasm and positivity. I picture him playing this with a huge grin on his big round face.

4. Al Betts Sextet - Get Set

Sorry for the revolting quality of this rip but it's the best I could dig up of this funky library rarity from 1973. Please someone buy me this record.

5. Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue

Blue Note was definitely the label that influenced me the most in the jazz world and there are plenty of famous examples of why they were so awesome. Cool as you like, this Kenny Burrell hit was the first time I properly loved the guitar in jazz music.

6. Ahmad Jamal Trio - Poinciana

The drum groove in this 1958 live recording is just the fucking raddest thing on the planet. So gentle and understated and so fucking hip. Owwwwwwwwww YEP.

7. Art Pepper - You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

This record Art Pepper did with Miles Davis' iconic rhythm section of the late '50s is just mental. Apparently he'd been on some epic heroin bender and had forgotten about the session until the day, then rocked up and somehow this came out. Philly Joe has always been one of my favourite drummers and as usual he's ridiculous on this.

8. Horace Silver - Song For My Father

Another Blue Note classic. Great melody, great players, a great session and just great music. Something I've always loved about jazz is that, generally speaking, the most well known artists and most popular records reached that level of popularity because they were simply the best, not because of marketing or trends or financial investment. This track was a hit because it totally rules.

9. Ino Hidefumi feat. Shigeru Suzuki - Cry Me A River

A really endearing Japanese version of the standard which is just really fun I guess.

10. Mario Biondi - This Is What You Are

I bought this record for the Opolopo remix on the flip, but turns out the original is where the real heat is. A catchy modern crooner with some nice solos - I'm a total sucker for trombones.

11. Willow Neilson Quartet - Oz Snooze

This was the band that my first, and most excellent, drums teacher Craig Simon was in and I always loved it. Willow's mixture of sweet and harsh timbres on the sax, and his tendency for dissonance (I'm not harmonically educated enough to know what's going on here) always interested me. Real tight group and, for me, very nostalgic.

12. Ben Webster - Soulville

Oh my god, get the fuck to a fireplace with a glass of port and listen to this immediately. The tone of Webster's sax is just leg-melting. So syrupy sweet and exquisitely controlled, this is an absolute masterpiece of laid back groovery.

13. Bugge Wesseltoft - Feel Good

More Bugge. From probably my all time favourite album, New Conception Of Jazz Live. Ahh it's beautiful.

14. Kidzen - Um Ah!

A very early release on Future Classic, this album is really killer future jazz crammed with choppy beats and samples from the Sydney talent. No idea if he's still around but I've always fantasised about seeing this stuff played live.

15. Quasimode - Last Nine Days

One of the more dramatic moments on this Neujazz CD compiled by Jazzanova a while back. A beautifully contoured piece which ends up being quite a journey.

16. Matthew Herbert - The Audience

The last cut from Bodily Functions, I just love this track and the way that, when the grand piano comes in, the whole thing blooms into this joyful presentation of colour after the cold and shadowy start.

17. Keith Jarrett Trio - Rider

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette are the best modern jazz trio in the world, even if Keith is a grumpy douche. End of story.
Alright then my little buttercups. As far as bigness goes, this bigness is relatively big. After six years of dicking around and never following through on the idea, at long last it's time to have a Disco Delicious party. Next Saturday night in Sydney, I'll be drenching everybody in my self-indulgence at this killer abandoned club space on William St, spinning DD favourites all night long. Click this masterpiece of a flyer for all the details.
NEXT NEWS ITEM: so this pile of old CDRs has been sitting next to my turntables for months and months, including these unmarked discs which I assumed were just five of the millions of burnt CDs I've never managed to throw out over the years. Last week I decided to listen to them, expecting some mad bangers from 07 or something, and instead they're crammed full of all this glorious music I've never heard before - folk, psychedelic, jazz-funk, all sorts of good shit. I haven't got the faintest idea how I got them or who made them, but whoever's responsible is really rather brilliant.

Naturally I got all excited and felt the burning desire to share this bonerising music. So, here's this mix-not-mix to showcase a bunch of my favourite cuts from the discs. I really wish I could take credit for this, but the glory is due entirely to this mysterious digger who either graciously gave me this music without me remembering, or was the unlucky victim of some sort of drunken CD heist which I managed to pull off without remembering, or some other scenario which I can't imagine and obviously don't remember. If you are/know this masked psychedelic king or queen, please make yourself known so I can apologise for my hysterically bad memory and shower you with praises.

Also realised I never mentioned our latest Death Strobe release on the blog - finally the 7" of hubbabubbaklubb's Mopedbart was unleashed unto the world, and it's now been repressed so you can still grab a copy from Juno or wherever.
It was six years ago, to this very day, that I set out to change the world. With my brand spanking new Blogger account I was going to take a stand against all the wrongdoings across the globe and fight for what I knew in my heart was right. Starving children would be fed, polar ice caps would stop shrinking, our Earth would be led those noble and true and Web 2.0 savvy. Such was the power of The Banger. With every speaker in every club in every country pumping in unison at 130bpm, singing the siren song of murdered fax machines and chainsaws molesting modems, together with our fluorescent orange torch we could make a difference.

So more than half a decade later, what have we learned? Have the sweet pingers of promise left a bitter taste in our mouths?

As Connecticut nobodies MGMT once proclaimed in a mighty Soulwax remix, "a family of trees wanted to be haunted." I don't think anybody ever gave a shit what that wimpy rubbish meant because 15 seconds later the real poetry began in the form of a bassline so perilously serrated it could saw through the eardrums of thousands of 19 year old ravers in an instant - or the equivalent of about 8 or 9 minutes for those in a K-hole. Today, admittedly, I prefer my audio a little less gory. Rather than asking "Does It Offend You, Yeah?" instead I find myself pondering "Was Dog A Doughnut?" When I overhear the mention of Justice, I quickly jump on Google to find out if we're any closer to catching that scumbag Kony. When I watch Electroma, I no longer play Human After All and tell myself it definitely syncs up. But I'll always have a soft spot for the bangers, blog house, Busy P and the Baltimore days.

By pure coincidence, today I stumbled across a mix I recorded in 2009 (titled Sillie Summer Assortment) which I haven't heard in yonks, probably because it was filed under DJ Doorknob which isn't a regular iTunes search for me, and I thought I'd post it up as the next Delishcast to celebrate this li'l occasion. It's completely and utterly stupid - I remember just hitting the record button and laughing like a mad scientist as I sifted through all sorts of dumb shit to play - but, in my ears, heaps of fun. Leo Zero's sublime Prefab Sprout edit, a sensationally cheesy Hotbath record, the piss-take awesomeness of Soft Tigers, some naughty Harry Nilsson and plenty more classic, weird or inappropriate cuts. I love DJing like this. So I hope you enjoy this expired turd of a birthday cake as much as I did.
Six years is ages! That's like 400 millennia in blog time. Sydney is killing it at the moment! Nearly a full month through autumn and we're still cracking the 30 degree days. Makes me a happy fella.

The latest Stripped & Chewed 12 has this really awesome cut by Simba. A Chicago locomotive that rolls along in dusty sepia, it's a bumping jazzy collage made up of keyboard trills, a mish-mash of hazy percussion snips, various guitar twangs, a tight bass loop and some cut up soulful man-vocals. All four tunes on the record are worth checking out, but this is the highlight for sure.

Geography Records fucking rule the shit out of house, even if their release rate is about rapid as ours is with Death Strobe. This latest Shakarchi & Straneus record is just stunning. Simple and fun and lovely - the A1 is just straight up feel good synthy house that nobody can argue with, and this song, the A2, is a beautiful paddy dream capsule which somehow feels really melodic despite having the most bare of piano melodies lightly tinkering away, almost lost in a sea of reverb. Real Cool - U Know, U Know was one of my favourite records of last year, and Geography have really hit the mark again early on in 2013.
Christoph El Truento is still a bloody dreamboat. He released this fantastic free album back in Feb, which apparently was finished years earlier, and it's been the soundtrack to many a recline-on-my-bed-with-breeze-blowing-through-the-window-sometimes-drinking-a-coconut moment. He keeps hassling people on his FB about voting for him in a Kiwi competition that will make him lots of money or something, just go here and click vote and make that dude rich.
A stone cold classic from 10 or 15 years back by DJ Nature under the name DJ Spearchucker. Can't actually remember where I first heard this edit but I've always been extremely fond of it. It's really gentle and warm, just grooving away over the same understated, perfect loop with emotional vocals and strings weaving in and out. There's no real origin or destination, just a beautiful limbo that keeps chugging away. Not an easy record to find, so if anyone sees it pop up on Discogs' marketplace, fuck off and just let me buy it k? Ta.
Shit alright I've got 18 months worth of stuff that needs posting so I'd better start getting through some of it for you chumpies. There's no freshness in this lot, but this is after all a Blogger page and freshness has no place on Blogger. Let's begin the Bloody Beetroots Greatest Hits Top 1000 Countdown shall we?

That guy Jimpster. He is definitely no joke. Remember that time he had that label, Delusions of Grandeur? That was cool. How about Freerange? Decent. Who here remembers the time he made cheekily made music as Franc Spangler and had me going all like "who is this dude wtffff" and then it was like "ahh it's old mate Jimpo" and the mystery was solved? Yes, we've established that he's been one of the koolest producers around for about 600 years now, and this remix he did for Patchworks way back in the 2005s is still a hot little potato. Super smooth gliding loungey grooves with poppy percussion and slick bass slides all over the shop. Hot tip.
This is what it sounds like when a woman is being powerful and you put a microphone in front of her and she tramples your testicles with her sweet funky song. Got a real thing for this track - great chorus, killer horns section, ripping vocals. Onya Viola Willis.
I've been working on a chiptune feature over the past few weeks and Omri Suleiman is definitely one of the coolest, most original cats I've come across. That this was created with a Commodore Amiga is massively impressive. Driving wobbing bass, amazing complex rhythms chaotically clattering all over the place, with brief lofty interludes offering a momentary break from the mayhem. Go have a listen to his album, 'Music For A 15 Year Old Me' at this rad purpose-built website, the dude is obviously crazy talented, I'm super eager to hear what he follows this up with.
I've been salivating over Germany's Max Graef for months now. He's been doing stuff with Melbourne Deepcast dawg Andy Hart, amongst other people, and he fits beautifully into the Melbs family. This is my favourite cut of his, released on the über-awesome Box Aus Holz - to me it's got a real Raw Cuts vibe to it with great samples, stripped back arrangement, insanely hip beat complete with finger clicks (which in my mind are terribly underutilised in dance music) all wrapped up in a neat Detroit flavoured package. This dude is doing some seriously good shit at the moment, get on it!
Been listening to a lot of Galapagoose in the past 12 months, since his debut LP came out on Daedalus' Magical Properties imprint almost exactly a year ago. Another Melbourne studio whiz, he makes fantastic weird beats with plenty of diversity. Some floaty melodic stuff, some dark weighty stuff, some playful poppy stuff, some really textural paddy stuff, always so well produced. Here are a couple of my faves: the first track of the album, which shows off the more sprightly side of his music, and a track off his earlier Parquet EP which is a bit moodier.
Heysuuuuuup.

How's everyone doing? Happy new year I guess. Just a pinch of news for Sydney folks - will be putting on a Disco Delicious night some time in May after a solid four years of procrastination. I don't have a date yet, so just keep the entire month free. Birthdays, weddings, whatever: make sure they're all priority number two.

So it's been a little while, sorry about that. For ages and ages I've been planning to put together a jazz-focused Delishcast but never got around to properly preparing it. Had a few drinks one night and started recording this mix with the intention of drafting up something jazzy, but that lasted all of two songs. Instead, this turned out to be pretty much an approximation of all my club sets over the past 18 months - it's not well mixed or put together, but it's very me. Every one of these records is in my bag permanently, I'll never get tired of any of them. Hope ya dig!
Let's see if I can remember how to do this. HEYSUP hope everyone's been well in the 15 million years since I last 'blogged' on this 'blog'. I can assure you I have no good reason for my absence (21st century life, billz, global warming etc) but I've got a buttload of great music that's been piling up in the to-post list and it's probably time to get rid of some.

Just to cover things in the news department first: I have a slick new mixer arriving very soon, apparently, which is going to be pretty spesh. Am planning to give it a major workout with a small Disco Delicious party in Sydney (unusual venue suggestions welcome) some time around Jan/Feb, spinning many hours of pork-schnitzelling, rainbow-gurgling, boob-honking disco goodness. Will also be partying with Psychemagik on The Island on Jan 5th, then playing Sydney Fest at Town Hall with Danny Wang and Darshan Jesrani ***BONER ALERT*** which will be pretty exceptional. Then we've got DSR007 by hubbabubbaklubb coming out in the very near future, that'll be a total lady slayer. So yeah, the summer is looking good. Unless you're in the northern hemisphere, then the summer is looking distant.

MUSIC. We all listen to it, whether it's when you see an ad on tv, when you're on hold to the phone company, or even when you take a ride on a classy elevator. I really like those musics you hear when you trip down some stairs in an alley and you end up in a nightclub and it's all 'doof doof doof doof' and the people spasm in perfect time with the 'beat'. Like this marvellous Kerri Chandler remix of Makam's You Might Lose It. It starts off all thumpy and bare and you're all like "hey what's going on here mate" and then the synths begin to blossom and the spring sun pokes out and everybody in Detroit is dancing and smiling. Snappy claps and precise percussion build into a glorious groove that I could see working a Saturday night dancefloor as easy as a Sunday afternoon rooftop crowd.

I heard Harvey play this on a radio show with Dennis Kane ages ago and kind of forgot about it until he gave it a spin on his latest BIS appearance. I could die of shame three times over for letting it slip my mind for all that time. An easy contender for the most beautiful disco track of all time, Gloria Ann Taylor's hugely sought after 1973 gift to the world, Love Is A Hurting Thing. Little description is needed - from the very first moment when the slightly tacky guitar shredding emerges from the pool of reverb and the kick starts to pump, it's a hugely emotional journey through the euphoric highs and excruciating lows of love, articulated by Gloria Ann's belting vocals which are so powerful and passionate it just about snaps your shins. I can just picture this being played as the last song at Horse Meat Disco and the world's biggest club tragedy unfolding as thousands of disco-loving men drown in a tsunami of tears. It comes at a price though - you'd be lucky to pick up a copy of the 12" for less than $500. Enjoy it here in as-good-as-you'll-ever-get 320.
Discovered this great Franc Spangler release from earlier days of the Delusions of Grandeur catalogue thanks to a killer DJ Nature mix. This track is the gift that keeps on giving - I really love every element of the track and the gradual layering which builds it up to vibe city. First the stabby little keys, then the thick plonking bassline, then the aggressively grooving hats, and finally the obligatory deep house chords which take things to a whole other harmonic plane. The snowballing energy makes this tune a super handy one to have in the bag, it can really get the juices flowing. Now will someone please tell me who Franc Spangler is? Why hasn't anybody found this out yet?
I'll leave you with this captivating Magic Mountain High track which was released on Workshop back in March. It's not really the kind of thing I'd generally listen to, but since the first time I heard it I was fascinated by the erratic jabbing synths and the all-out wackiness of the song. It somehow sounds (to me) both organic and totally alien and artificial. Something about it makes perfect sense. I heard Floating Points spin the other more minimal, muted version of this track, the B2, when he played in Sydney a couple of weeks ago (omg jizzzzz) which was a nice shock, since I expected I would never hear it out in my lifetime, and would certainly never have the cojones to play it myself. Might give it a shot though.
Some straight up jams on this fine record by The Noodleman. Way down in the super-slow zone, Sloppy Angel is a proper sex-drenched cut with a slammer of a bassline that I really wanna track down. There's some nice dubbed out goodness on the B, but for me it'll be this side that gets a rinsing - and has already. Quality erotic disco funk.
A beauty of a Bjørn Torske tune here which Tamas Jones kindly put me onto. This one's taken from his debut album way back in 1998, and it's still seriously fresh. Very loosely structured, Expresso just kinda flounders around with some lovely sounds, gaining and shedding layers as it pleases. It features the world's most gentle lead synth which placidly wiggles around leaving a trail of warmth behind it. A great record!
Way late posting this Moodymann remix of Pollyn but if you haven't caught it yet you're really missing out. While there's a Harvey remix on the flip, this is most definitely where the action is at. Mellow party vibes, shadowy but massively grooving, Moody strips it right back to focus on the vocals and bass, occasionally fading in some of his trademark crowd noise which somehow instantly makes a tune ten times more hip. Actually, although it's a very restrained, unusually subtle offering from KDJ, it's still completely him. The mildly dissonant pads, the meticulous drum programming, it's all there and it's so good.
Was really surprised to see that this Singin' Fools 7" was available at Juno. It doesn't feel like a bootleg or recent repress, although I'm wrong about a lot of things. Anyway, some of you might recognise it from Psychemagik's 'High on You' mix as the glorious opening track. Incredible melodies, hugely powerful vocals, a superb arrangement. I'm so happy to own a copy of this, it's just such a gem.
Christ I've been spending shitloads of cash on Discogs lately. Even in a good month I'll rack up a pretty worrying dollar figure on records, but the past few weeks have been pretty next level. I'm nearly 3 weeks into a month-long stint of no booze (or cigarettes, for that matter) and I'm clueless as to how I'm supposed to spend my time. So I spend it spending. Don't get too excited - it's mostly stuff that I've just wanted on 12" for ages, there haven't been too many crazy discoveries. But it's all good stuff. Like this Aqua Bassino track from 2001. Some sloppy as fuck vocals courtesy of a seemingly semi-comatose Jill Vader which are propped up by one seriously rad, contrastively tight bassline that vibes like crazy. Yummo.
A stone cold classic, this Pépé Bradock is just one of those must have records. The epic B-side, Deep Burnt, is 11 minutes of house glory. The kind of thing that House of House were surely thinking of when they came up with Rushing to Paradise. A monster. I'm glad to say, though, that the A-side is bloody great too! A real bumping deep jam some orgasmic synths and powerful girly vocals that keep reminding you about heat and hotness and how hot everything is. That's the general message I picked up on anyway. Love it.
WOAH NELLY, GO EASY ON THE CLASSICS HEY? No, I won't. This is Mister Morgan Geist at his finest. Sounding like he's closer to 85% of Metro Area than the 50% we're all led to believe, this has all the elements that make Geistypoo and old mate Darshan so excellent. Simple and somehow perfect rhythms, restrained orchestration, every individual part working together gorgeously, and of course some legit strings. This record is 11 years old and, like pretty much all of the MA material, it'll be sounding fresh for the next few thousand years. Boom.
At last a new one! This Midland remix single is a bit of a {BANG0R ONLY ZONE} but that's ok with me, I'm hip and I can dig it. While the MCDE mix on the flip is pretty fine, this Lone rework really tickles me. Way deep and wonderfully percussive, it's really rather danceable. Disc Jockeys of the world take note: I can safely award this my 'dark club appropriate' seal of approval.
Now onto the tunesies. So many months of records to catch up on posting, let's start with the essentials. Anthony Naples' debut EP is pretty fucking ridiculatron. The title track, my personal fave, is a pure house jam for a smiling dancefloor. I've been LOVING playing this one out, it's always the first record I reach for. NYC vibing. Seriously recommend picking this twelve up.
Another one that hasn't left my bag since I got it - this James Johnston record. I actually had no idea who he was, but I signed into my second Juno account which I haven't used in forever and found this sitting in the shopping cart with no memory of listening to it. Thank god I stumbled across it again. One of those incredibly rare, incredibly useful pieces of wax where every one of the 4 tracks is absolutely playable. I probs wouldn't have any gripes about playing them all in the one set if I was confident nobody would notice. Rock solid deep house goodness, if you DJ this stuff then this is pure gold.

It took me a little while to get into this Andrés EP, I have to admit. I listened to it a bunch of times in my bedroom and wasn't quite understanding the hype around the A-side, New For U. Yeah it's quite lovely, but I wasn't in the 'woah shit' zone. Then I heard it out for the first time on Saturday and it clicked. GREAT TRACK! So after saying that I'm not sure why I'm posting Jazz Dance instead. It's the tune on the record that really sat well with me immediately, and I still dig it a lot. Again, the appreciation got taken to the next level the first time I gave it a club spin. So yeah.

Lastly, a nice extended version of Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain'. On the flip is a nice old edit of Down To Love Town, so this is a very tasty twelve-inch. Mellow, emotive, soulful pre-disco disco. It's just a good song.
Hey chaps - welcome back to the most reliable, most punctual, most dependable blog on the internet. Sorry, spellcheck is telling me I should be capitalising the I in Internet. Your wish is my command, oh supreme network overlord.

Finally another Delishcast is for your enjoyment/contentment/mild disappointment. This initially came from a playlist I made for a friend a while back, but I've replaced most of the stuff that's already been used here on DD. Not all, but most. Basically it was intended as one big billboard promoting some of my favourite people and labels from the past 6 months and beyond: Christoph El Truento, Floating Points, Quiroga/Really Swing, Jazzy Sport and Wonderful Noise. Also this guy The Nothing who I only discovered a couple of days ago is really fab too. For the most part this mix is a whole bunch of nice beats. I know absolutely fuck all about hip hop and couldn't tell you the difference between any of the newfangled genres which are some form of electronic deviation, but I do know that I love a good groove and I'm especially partial to putting jazz into the hands of beatmakers. Anyway, hope you dig this one. There'll be more to come!
Nah just kidding, I'm still here. OK, so where were we...

Actually, in my slack, unexplained absence, this little blog of mine turned 5 years old. Man that freaks me out. It's been really fun having people read the trash that I dump here, and it's certainly brought me a great deal of fame, money and bitches. A wholehearted thanks to everybody whose music I've exploited for my own financial gain, and equal gratitude to everybody who's laid eyes on this monstrosity on more than one occasion. You're all lovely!

So yeah, so we just released Sleep D's record which turned out beautifully! Very proud of the whole package - just take a look!
Gorgeous. The music is stunning too, and you're all aware that I was a genuine fan long before we ever got talking about a release. Have a listen to the full thing, then if you're digging it or just feeling generous, go nab a copy from Juno or some place like that. Uh, what else is news... Caught Moodymann last month which was utterly incredible. The first time I saw him spin it was just flat out boring, but this was out of control amazing. So fucking Detroit. That was the first time I heard the Opolopo remix of Gregory Porter's 1960 What? which totally melted my face. One of the most vital records I've heard in ages, go snatch a copy immediately. Also check out this rad cover of Black Mahogani by Cro-Magnon, such a vibing lounge jam. Some of the Cro-Magnon stuff really weirds me out, but this Mellow Out & Acoustic album is totally supreme. Oh, and in case you missed it, a new Moody EP came out through that whole Scion/AV thing, and it's pretty tops. Grab it here!
Shit guys, sorry for being so rubbish, my business quota has been filled for the next 16 years, especially considering I'm a world class procrastinator. On top of that, I've practically just been listening to old Beatles and jazz records for the past couple of months and I've got fuck all new stuff to share. Although I think I will do a bit of a jazz Delishcast to catalogue things.

First up - one of the reasons I've been so busy is our endless string of Picnic parties, culminating in this weekend's gig with Horse Meat Disco. Here are a couple of boss tracks to cruise into your weekend with - a complete and utter JAM from Michael Wycoff's second album, and a track by Paladin which fills me with complete and utter joy. Both superb.
Aside from that, it's been all mixes happening on my stereo. Here's a trio, all very different, which I can't recommend highly enough. A Moodymann rollerdisco set from RBMA in London which is crammed full of CLASSICS - Kenny Dixon Jr. playing a Jamiroquai record? Blew my mind. Then two consecutive RA podcasts which are universes apart: Harvey's whacked out journey that stinks of mescaline and self-indulgence, the kind of mix I thought he'd never record again; and Floating Points' gorgeous mix which covers all flavours of disco and electronic music in a seriously classy way. All three are brilliant, in my opinion. If you don't already subscribe to the RA Podcast, well, that's upsetting. It always has and always will be killer, and I'm not just saying that because I work for them. I hope my boss sees this.
Sorry for being a bum. If you're ever feeling lonely, go listen to one of the Test Pressing podcasts and you can bet that I'll be listening too. It'll be magic.

andy webbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10559250348044831744noreply@blogger.com21
