Hi Jay

Heaps tired ay brothers and sisters, shall we keep it concise? Yes. So I picked up this early Dimitri From Paris EP the other week which is really lovely. This is a particularly nice cut. It reminds me of something Dimitri From Paris would do, all French and that. Get yo lounge vibe on. Thanks.

I could do with a bit of a Sleep D right now. Yes indeed these Melbourne lads are killing me softly right now. This one is great, the bass is all like 'bwummmmmmmrr' and the kick is all like 'boof boof' and somehow all those things come together just fine. If I was to label this music with a genre, I would call it 'Good'. If I was to invent a genre that this sounds nothing like, it would be 'Shitcore'.

Sleep D - Mazes

This wonderful little Doctor Stereo seven inchy on the ultra-marvellous Names You Can Trust is a really happy thing. It's all cumbia and stuff - there's this piano that blings and blongs and plods and plonks, rumbly wumbly drums, all these fun percussive things that do all kinds of nice sounds that it would be fun to try and type out but then again that sounds like a lot of effort. And there's this woo-woo little synth thingy like a computer game siren that's great to look out for. A+

Doctor Stereo - La Cumbia Perdida [buy]

Goodness me this Haules Baules track woke me up. When that big butch bassline comes in you turn to your pal or you look in your mirror if you don't have any pals and you make this face that's like 'aw yeahhhh dude' which is sorta 15% surprise, 65% pleasure and 20% miscellaneous and you start nodding your head and probably punching the air. Make sure you have sufficient space to do that or you could hurt yourself or somebody else. Go to work and earn money then come home and spend that money on buying the good records like this one.

Haules Baules - Hit Me Slowly [buy]

Also peep your peepers on this biz going on at LN-CC - old mate Mark Seven (aka GOD) is selling some rekkids and doing some jockeying and stuff instore. This goodness will be up online over four weeks I believe so get ya credit cards out and start weeping. Checkit here. See you guys in bed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Bendy Straws

Ohhhh mannnnnnn that was the best weekend. Special Disco Version destroyed it, Theo Parrish blew my mind, The Swiss gave me a massive boner, Mayer Hawthorn was all sorts of charming and both Lovefingers and Brennan Green perfectly capped off a great few days.

There is an insane amount of stuff happening in Sydney at the moment, it's all becoming too much! Next Saturday will be huge with DFA's Shit Robot playing at GoodGod! The man responsible for one of 2009's finest songs in one of Sydney's funnest clubs - stunning! I've got a double pass to dish out for the night so if you're keen to trundle along email me your name and cross your fingers. Chasm is still a real late night dark classic which has aged quite gracefully in the last couple of years. Check out the event for more deets. Wheeeee!

Shit Robot - Chasm [buy]

OK going to try not to turn this blog into a Sydney events page, I'll ease off for a bit. Just to backtrack a little, Rove Dogs' first release on his Small Time Cuts label includes this absolutely rocking edit with a fiercely funky upbeat bassline. On the party vibe scale this is dangerously high - as I'm sure some of you have picked up, I'm a bit of a sucker for wakka-wakka guitars joining forces with a beefy bass and tight percussion. Friday is almost here! This really is one of those little labels you can't afford to ignore.

Rove Dogs - Junior Park [buy]

Backtracking further now, naturally in the lead up to having my head microwaved by James and Pat I was smashing their legendary Fabriclive mix. Our Parisian friend Dimitri's edit of this Love Committee track has always been one of my favourites on this CD and, like just about every track in the mix, it's truly well worth hearing the whole thing which, beyond SDV's departure point, extends into a couple of different and equally beautiful sections. A really spectacular song!

Love Committee - Just As Long As I Got You (Disco Re-Edit by Dimitri From Paris)

And now going right back to a 7" from 1978 which was reissued last year to surprising DJ acclaim.. This warped, slightly obscure, tripped out and concise disco funk track by Hercule is something special. I was quite blown away to see how many artists charted the unofficial 12" on Juno - Ajello, Todd Terje, Faze Action, Beatfanatic and so on. It's super cheeky and twisted and overall very loveable. And the original cover is hysterical.

Hercule - Sunday Morning Fever [buy]

Will be back next week with some proper new stuff. This Saturday if you're around town in the afternoon, come to this groovy laneway gig/bloc party that Ash and I (Death Strobe ooooooohhhh) are playing nice and early at. Have (another) wonderful weekend!

France is the New (Old?) France

Or France is the old new France? Or something. I've taken a step back into the world of Roulé and delightful memories of the French House explosion are flooding back in waves of ecstasy. How about a revival? I suppose Breakbot is doing a nice job preserving + updating the sound. Any other takers?

Here's some inspiration! Starting with the most obvious and heading down to.... still the most obvious. I feel like a tool, but I was never actually aware these remixes existed. Hopefully they're new to some other ears too, because I was super impressed. Bob Sinclar's mix of Stardust is the cooolest song I could think of sliding down a couch to. Dimitri and Bibi's adds some nice disco chic flavour with Dim's typically wonderful long progression stretching it out to a 10+ minute grooveee.

Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You (Bob Sinclar Remix)

Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You (Bibi & Dim's Anthem From Paris)

Bangalter, the glorious man responsible for human existence, put out plenty of great tunes on his label, but my faves are probably his remixes. His super funky mix of Roy Davis Jr's track, already an especially funky number, adds some typical Bangalter awesomeness, whilst the super-slow-to-start over-the-top-filter edit of Braxe's Vertigo breaks into an upbeat energetic bouncy ball. Bring back filter house!

Roy Davis Jr. - Rock Shock (Thomas Bangalter's Start-Stop Mix)

Alan Braxe - Vertigo (Thomas Bangalter's Virgo Edit)

More predictable classics I hear you cry? I like your enthusiasm. Let's go way mainstream with big French duos. Not much needs to be said about any of these, they're all solid gold (I'll take this opportunity to say a massive thanks to the brilliant Solid Goldberger, where i found most of the Roulé tracks!) and proof that just because music is hugely popular doesn't instantly mean it's shit. Cassius are amazing. Daft Punk are amazing. Bangalter/Falcon Supercombo are amazing. Easy.

Cassius - Cassius 1999 (Remix) (Long Version)

Daft Punk - Something About Us (Eastar Remix - Without Brass Version)

Together - So Much Love To Give (Archigram Remix)

Oh dear. I'm getting in DEEP here, soon I'll be posting the latest Ministry of Sound singles. I'll try and restrain myself after I get this out of my system: I'm guessing a lot of you agree with me (whether you want to admit it or not) that Stuart Price's remix of Four to the Floor was one of the sweetest tunes ever. I remember listening to it over and over when I was 15 or whatever, and years on it still has the same effect on me. C'mon, it's pretty fucking killer, yes? Don't be shy.

Starsailor - Four to the Floor (Thin White Duke Remix)

Ok ok, last one. I'm just in a self-dug chasm of blog shame here, so I may as well just finish off with a big blog steal (thank you discobelle) of Miami Horror's latest Presets remix. Usually I don't post Ben's stuff because within seconds of release it's all over every blog you can find, but this is just too good not to get a piece of the action. Without a doubt one of the best Aussie producers at the moment, and he keeps getting better, which makes me a proud boy.

The Presets - Talk Like That (Miami Horror Remix)

Oh well, I'm just having a bit of fun. Hope you enjoy these reminders like I have! To cap off this shameful message, here's some blatant self promotion: I urge any of you Sydney hipsters to swing by Candy's Apartment this Friday for the ridiculously fun night we're putting on each week of July. Calling In Sick are our special blog-cred guests this week, so it'll be well worth coming! Hope to see you there :) come say hello!
